Purpose of Position
The AmeriCorps Member will assist with ongoing Environmental Education and Stewardship Programming at NC’s oldest land trust. The member will assist with and develop new Environmental Education programs that currently reaches nearly 1000 people annually in southern Macon and Jackson Counties. The member will develop new field based formal and informal natural history hikes at land trust properties. In addition, the member will continue the development of a trail network at a newly acquired 74 acre site, coordinate volunteers to help with that effort, and develop a new program to create a natural history database of protected lands. The member will work collaboratively with Mainspring Conservation Trust to restore stream-side vegetation in the HCLT service area.
Essential Functions / Physical Demands
The AmeriCorps Member must be able to safely lead others on hikes and trail building in the mountains of western North Carolina and therefore be in good physical condition. The member must be able to communicate concepts in natural history to others of all ages, in particular young children (ages 5-12). Physically able to assist in stewardship activities including building trails, chainsaw work, map and maintenance of trails.
Normal HCLT programming is conducted on an M-F 9am to 5pm schedule. We would require the Member to conduct educational hikes during those normal operating hours but also like to extend those hours to weekends up to twice a month.
